Technology transforms digital reader into gesture navigation surface on Android.

OneNav is Motorola’s technology that transforms a cell phone’s fingerprint sensor into a trackpad – a tactile surface that allows gesture navigation on your smartphone. The technology is present in the latest phones of the Moto G, Moto X and Moto Z lines, appearing for the first time in the launch of Moto G5 and Moto G5 Plus in February 2017.

The fifth generation of the Moto G family debuted the front biometric reader with larger contact area, which today is characteristic of several cell phones of the manufacturer. Previously the component was only able to recognize the user’s finger.

OneNav Features

Once enabled, the feature allows you to slide to the sides to go back or open the multitasking screen. The sensor also acts as the home button, taking the user to the home screen with a touch of the surface. By holding the digital player by pressing for about two seconds, the screen can be locked. Finally, when you rest your finger for a longer time, your smartphone activates Google Assistant .

The accuracy of the command may vary depending on the phone. Although they look almost the same, the sensors used on different Motorola models show performance differences. Therefore, the trend is that the recognition of gestures is better a premium category device, compared to a Moto G.

Benefits of gesture navigation

The big advantage of OneNav (also called “one-touch browsing”) is to hide the traditional Android navigation buttons to free up more screen space on your phone. By using the sensor to trigger the back keys, recent apps and start, Android frees the display footer to show more content from open applications. It’s a way to take full advantage of the pixels on the screen, using the full amount of space available.

Models compatible with OneNav

Since the launch of the Moto G5, almost all of Motorola’s new phones have a multi-function digital sensor with OneNav technology. See below for the list of models compatible with gesture navigation technology.

  • Moto Z2 Play
  • Moto Z2 Force
  • Moto G5S and G5S Plus

Step 2. Activate the key at the top of the screen to automatically hide the Android navigation buttons. From there the sensor can already be used with gestures to activate the same functions. Finally, touch the arrow at the bottom to select the direction of the recent app gestures and go back.
