Take the giant movie monsters to the real world
It is increasingly common to see Hollywood studio partnerships with mobile game developers seeking to promote upcoming motion picture releases off the big screen. One of the most recent actions is for the movie “Rampage: Total Destruction”, which recently won a game based on augmented reality (RA).
The film, starring actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, is based on the classic franchise that began in 1986 in the Arcade consoles, reaching Rampage: Total Destruction, GameCube and PlayStation 2 – the same name that gives the film its name. In games, users controlled gigantic creatures to destroy cities while deflecting from military attacks.
Now in the mobile version, entitled Rampage: Total Destruction AR, the thing is a bit different. You still command the monsters and spread chaos through the metropolis, but the characters use augmented reality technology to override the real world.
Gameplay requires no specific skill. All you have to do is point the camera from your mobile device to a monument or building (or just to the middle of the street) and select one of the monsters available in the app. From there, the animal appears on the object scanned by the photographic sensor of the device.
Each creature has two own animations and a third special movement of destruction, as well as sound roars and particle effects based on the real environment. You can adjust the size of the animal by decreasing or increasing its proportion as well as recording a short video of the monster causing chaos and sharing it on social networks.
It is also possible to use the monsters to destroy long posters. Among the characters included in the app are George, the gorilla, Ralph, the wolf and Lizzie the alligator.
The movie “Rampage: Destruction Total” premieres in Brazil on April 12.
Rampage: Total Destruction AR is not exactly a game, but rather an augmented reality experience that, however well done it may be, is quite tedious and limited.
The only thing the app allows you to do is to transport the monsters from the franchise to the real world, visualize them roaring and pounding where we point the camera to the phone, and that’s it. You can even make a short clip to advertise on your social networks, but otherwise, there is no differential that encourages the constant use of this tool.
The visual and sound effects are great, with creatures built into well-finished graphics. And another advantage is that the camera works without locking. But neither are these aspects enough to make your stay more than a few minutes with the open platform on your device.
